Matchday 2 Recap: Atalanta Fly High Over Lazio in Rome

In convincing, fearless, and clinical fashion, Atalanta were able to successfully avenge their 3-3 tie last time away against the Laziali. In a match that was seemingly in Lazio’s favor, Atalanta maximized their chances and took advantage of a weak and sometime careless Lazio defense. As always Papu Gomez was sensational with his brace, and the dynamic wingback combination struck again that teams seem unable to handle. A convincing away victory just like this is a strong and encouraging signal that Atalanta are deadset on getting back to Champion’s League and potentially challenging Inter and Juventus for the top spot in Serie A.

Sensational again, not enough to say about Papu

Yesterday’s match was unique. Atalanta seemed content sitting behind the ball, inviting pressure from Lazio’s press, and hitting on the counter when the opportunity presented itself. And boy were La Dea clinicial. Their chances were few and far between, but they capitalized when necessary. Papu’s goals couldn’t have been placed better, and the Gosens to Hateboer Dutch connection was as classic an Atalanta goal as you can craft.

On the defensive side, I won’t lie it was nerve wracking. It was strange to see Atalanta almost inviting pressure, but it worked. Freuler bossed Luis Alberto and was the unsung hero of the midfield. Palomino also came up big again and was incredibly strong in the middle of the pitch, making life extremely difficult for Caicedo. We also got our debut from Christian Romero, and the one word that comes to mind is intrigued. He’s obviously not afraid to throw his body around and play in an incredibly cavalier nature. It seems he’s taking to the press, and I think showed enough to be a strong rotation option for Gasperini, possibly surpassing Caldara in the pecking order.

The Semblance of a Team Has Helped Atalanta Reach New Heights

As a unit, Atalanta is already clicking on all cylinders. The continuity the team has been able to maintain cannot be stressed enough, allowing the club to see out wins in multiple ways. It’s as if the club has developed a sixth sense and everyone knows exactly what they need to do and where they need to be. The project Gasperini has put together continues to pay huge dividends, and today’s victory is a convincing step in the right direction to keep reaching new heights. Great win today boys, and always Forza La Dea!
